BIOS:
Jose
Rivera (playwright) 's plays have been seen throughout the U.S. and
translated into six languages. Honors include two Obie Awards for
Playwriting (MARISOL andREFERENCES TO SALVADOR DALI MAKE ME HOT, produced
at the Public Theatre), a Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays Grant
(THE STREET OF THE SUN), as well as grants from the NEA, the Rockefeller
Foundation, and the New York Foundation for the Arts. Rivera received
a Fulbright Arts Fellowship in Playwriting, the Whiting Foundation Writing
Award, a McKnight Fellowship, a Berilla Kerr Playwriting Award, and the
Titan Theatre Earthshaker Award. Rivera has studied with Nobel Prize
Winner Gabriel Garcia Marquez at the Sundance Institute, was a writer-in-residence
at the Royal Court Theatre, London, and co-created and produced the critically
acclaimed NBC-TV series "Eerie, Indiana." Rivera wrote the screenplay for
"The Motorcycle Diaries," directed by Brazilian director Walter Salles,
featuring Gael Garcia Bernal. His plays include THE HOUSE OF RAMON
IGLESIA, CLOUD TECTONICS, SONNETS FOR AN OLD CENTURY, GIANTS HAVE US IN
THEIR BOOKS, ADORATION OF THE OLD WOMAN, SUENO, and MASSACRE (SING TO YOUR
CHILDREN).
KJ
Sanchez (director) created and directed the original dance theatre
piece, Too Much Water, for the University of Washington's Professional
Actor Training Program. She recently directed Jose Rivera's Sonnets
for an Old Century at Location One and The Actors Center. KJ
is a member of New York Theatre Workshop's Usual Suspects, The Actors Center
Workshop Company and a founding member of The Civilians. KJ is a
William and Eva Fox Foundation fellow, a Drama League Directing fellow,
and a NEA/TCG Career Development Program for Directors recipient.
As an actress, she most recently created the role of Luis Michelle, "The
Red Virgin" in Paris Commune for The Civilians which premiered
at the Mazur Theater in New York. KJ performed the role of Thyona
in Charles L Mee's Big Love at the 2000 Humana Festival, Long Wharf
Theater, Berkeley Rep, The Goodman and the 2001 BAM Next Wave Festival.
KJ is a former company member of Anne Bogart's SITI Company. With SITI
KJ collaborated on three original pieces: Going Going Gone, Small Lives
Big Dreams and Culture of Desire and performed extensively throughout
the US and internationally.
